Hi all,
I'm looking for a couple of people to test an update of SMBMounter for me. SMBMounter is a front-end for SMBFS, and the release I'm working on now has added functionality to find servers and shares on your network, making mounting shares on your Amiga very easy indeed!

It's written for 68k & OS3, but works on OS4, and possibly works on MorphOS too. So, if you have any of these systems, a network with some shared drives available, and Samba installed on your machine, I'd really appreciate if you could take a few minutes to try it out. PM me with your email address if you're interested, or drop into #amigaworld.

Thanks!

@Daedalus

Will happliy test it out on MorphOS 2.7 for you. Is a full SAMBA installation required, or just SMBFS?

'Finding' available shares sounds excellent, would love to have a network browser available!

Thanks guys, I'll PM you a link later on to the beta version. The mounting of shares just requires SMBFS, but finding the shares requires SMBClient and NMBLookup, and the easiest way to have these on your system is to have Samba installed... I don't know how much of a Samba installation you really need - perhaps just those two executables might be enough.

I'm happy to try but have been unsuccessful with this type of thing in the past.

@all

Thanks for your offers, check your PMs for a download link. It would be great if you let me know what you tried that works, what doesn't work, what machine(s) you tried it on, and what types of shares it worked with.

Thanks again!

If you need one more person, I'd be happy to. Will test (havily daily) on Sam440-Flex and A1-XE
both with AmigaOS4.1u4

great that an update is coming!

Thanks guys! Also, for you MorphOS and OS3 users, maybe you could suggest some icons I could use for the SMBMounter files which I could include in the final archive? I only have OS4 icons at the moment...

I guess this won't allow us to connect to Windows7? Also will it allow us to see the Amiga inside the list of networked computers

Nope, Windows Vista and 7 won't work by default due to changes in how they work. I've seen some tricks for getting it to work by disabling various security options and messing about with the registry, but haven't tried any myself since I only have XP and Linux to share with here.

As for the Amiga showing up in the list: Yes, it will show up in the list along with all the other computers which have shares. This is down to Samba working correctly on the Amiga though, rather than anything to do with SMBMounter itself. If Windows (or anything else) can see your Amiga, then so will SMBMounter.

@Daedalus

I tried messing with them but ended up with unreliable networking resulting in corrupt files and not visible Amiga. I had to type the ip and directory manually to be able to see the files but it only worked a couple of times and never worked after that. I have no idea why.

I guess I can't make Samba work correctly on my Amiga. Maybe only if there was a more recent version and if it's not my fault.

Hmmm... That's a strange one. I have heard of a couple of people having file corruption issues over Samba, but don't know the root cause. Are you sure the MTU is set correctly on all your interfaces, routers, modem etc?

I'm not really sure and I can't figure it out at all. What I did was to try and buy Amiga Explorer which has been working perfectly well for me for transferring files from my Amiga hard drives to my PC and vise versa. (using the PC)

@Daedalus

Have used a version of Samba I tried recently and can now see other machines using your mounter.
I can't actually mount them, though.

I have a version of OS4 where I think I made some network config changes the last time I tried SAMBA.

I will try booting that up and see what happens.

Wow, it's a strange one alright. Have you tried using FTP between the machines? Does that work?

@TiredofLife

Do you get any errors when you try to mount them? Can you mount them by hand with SMBFS? Thanks for the feedback!

@Daedalus

Just tried with an earlier installation of the OS where I had followed a Samba installed guide.

This is for my network drive.

Error - Unable to mount share for unknown reason
Check all spellings and settings and try again.

This occured after entering the username and hitting connect.
No password was set for that particular share so none was entered.

My Amiga now shows up but I dont get as far as entering a username.
Says no shares information available.

Hmmm... If you wouldn't mind, could you run smbmounter from the shell with the debug argument and try both the network drive and the Amiga again? Redirect it to a file as well, so something like this:

smbmounter debug >t:smbmounter.log

There will be a couple of other files in T: as well - if you could send them to me as well I'd really appreciate it. they're smbmounter.temp, smbfs.output, smbclient.output and nmblookup.output. I'll PM you my email address...

It might be the username with no password thing - I'll have to check it out. I don't have any shares here that require just a username. What OS is that on?

Thanks!
